Personally I think that squid as a type of food has received a bad rap in the United States. The English language has a large part to play in this downward spiral away from edible popularity. Other cultures with more aurally pleasing nomenclature for this cephalopod enjoy it as it was meant to be, a tasty treat from Mother Ocean. Even when used alternatively in other dishes, its popularity soars when the name is changed. Calamari and Ika for example are quite popular from their respective fryers and sushi tables all over the USA. Onomatopoeically the word "squid" sounds at best like the byproduct of a venereal disease...at best. Perception has a great deal to do with smell and taste and memory. I propose we change the name from "Squid" to "Gamble Fish". The Gamble Fish! Now that's a name. It's cool fellah, but not too cool to show you the business of an inking session. Guys want to be him and whale's want to eat him. What awesome risk will the Gamble Fish take now? Skydiving? Extreme Drowning? Bet on Cincinnati while driving drunk? What's he going to do with all those legs? Who knows! Maybe steal your wallet, and have unprotected sex with your sister. Now that's something people would want to try at a restaurant, not "Squid". Everyone can rejoice and partake of the new awesomely named Gamble Fish. Not me though I think they're chewy and taste like a sea hooker's vajay. |
